So, it was my boyfriend's 30th birthday on 11th September and aside from the usual request for a HDTV he really, really wanted a WALL-E cake and so the quest began! My research, of course, was conducted on the net to see how other people had approached such a project. Cakes ranged from the absolutely fabulous to the errrrr not so fabulous (sorry but that cake makes me laugh so much). However there were no direct instructions out there so I decided to go it alone and see what I could come up with. This isn't going to be a step by step guide on how to create a WALL-E cake, I just wanted it to be a place to document how I created him and what ingredients I used so that other people can be inspired.

This is how the little fella turned out...

It should be noted that we didn't eat WALL-E for two days because we couldn't face cutting into him. Yes, we are a pair of softies :)

It all began with a recipe from the BBC Food site for a LARGE sponge cake....

Forget your diets and start with a Wagamama bowl full of butter (700g).

You also need 12 medium eggs (free range of course).

These are all of the ingredients I used for the cake. As I was making a marble cake, only half of the cake mixture had some cocoa added to it.

Creaming the sugar and butter together was tasty :)

Here are the two different bowls of mixture.
Dollop the mixture into the trays.
All three tins filled with sponge cake mixture goodness.

Mix it all up to obtain the marbled effect.
Once the cakes are in the oven, eat the mixture tidy up!

Mmmm licking the bowl :)
The cakes took about 45 mins to bake and then cool on the rack for a good half an hour. As you can see, the marble effect didn't quite reach the bottom of the cake, oh well!
WALL-E and his constituent parts.
After cutting up the cakes, I begin to assemble WALL-E. He's looking camouflaged at the moment :)
Close up of naked WALL-E.
It was now time to start working on the icing.

WALL-E was stuck together with lots of toothpicks. I kinda feel I should do a Blue Peter style warning here, mehhh you're all adults and you are a numpty if you eat one!

WALL-E was iced using butter icing. the recipe for this was from the Cadbury's website - just don't add the cocoa until you come to ice his tracks. They also have some cool cake recipes on their site *drool*.
Yellow coloured butter icing for WALL-E's body. (mmmm E numbers).
Grey coloured butter icing for his head and control panel.
Chocolate butter icing for WALL-E's tracks.
Basic WALL-E without any decoration. I used Cadbury's Mini Roll for his neck and stabbed it with lots of toothpicks to keep it in place. I also used Cadbury's Chocolate Fingers for WALL-E's tracks.

Side view of Wall-E.

To make WALL-E's little arms I used a mini bar of Green and Black's chocolate. I hunted round the whole of Welwyn Garden City for a Dime bar to no avail so I went up-market for his arms.
To attach his arms to his body I needed to drill a hole to stick the toothpick into and then stick it into the cake.

And here he is!

I think Ade is happy :)
